Prorogation is defined as the action of discontinuing a session of a parliament or other legislative assembly without dissolving it.
It is also being reported that the prime minister and his Chief of Staff, Katie Telford, met with PMO staffers today to communicate to the rest of the team that they did not see a path ahead for him continuing leadership in the lack of Liberal caucus support.
According to sources, Liberal MPs have been invited to a special two-hour virtual briefing this afternoon on the party’s constitution and the caucus’ participation in leadership matters.
The Liberal Party of Canada’s constitution states that “upon the occurrence of a leadership trigger event,” or if the leader announces their resignation, a meeting of the national board of directors must be held within 27 days.
After consulting with caucus, the board could designate an interim leader. Top party officials would also be needed to determine a leadership vote date and other race-related restrictions.
PM has led the Liberal Party of Canada since 2013 and served as Prime Minister since 2015.
