The government of New Brunswick is taking significant steps to address the province’s ongoing housing crisis by rolling out new initiatives aimed at increasing affordable housing options. With the federal government’s approval, New Brunswick’s proposal to remove the provincial portion of the HST on eligible multi-unit builds has been accepted, putting local developers on an equal footing with those in other Atlantic provinces.

Tax Rebate to Boost Affordable Housing Development

The newly approved HST rebate program is expected to drive more affordable housing projects across the province. The rebate applies to construction that began between November 15, 2024, and December 31, 2027, with substantial completion required by December 31, 2029. Regulatory and system adjustments are currently being made to facilitate the implementation of this rebate for developers in New Brunswick.

Premier Susan Holt emphasized the importance of this measure, stating, New Brunswickers have told us they are struggling to make ends meet and struggling to find an affordable place to call home. We want to spark more development of affordable multi-unit builds and ensure more New Brunswickers have access to the affordable and available housing they need.”

New Public Housing Units Underway

The announcement was made in Edmundston, where 10 new public housing units are being constructed. These modular one-bedroom units, located on Squateck Street, are expected to be ready for occupancy in the coming months.

In addition to these units, the government is currently working on 149 public housing units spread across 17 sites in the province. Planning is also underway for an additional 40 units, set to be completed in the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Collaborative Approach to Housing Solutions

Minister David Hickey, who oversees the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, highlighted the government’s commitment to working collaboratively with municipalities and community partners. “There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to solving the housing crunch, and that is why we are working across departments, and in tandem with our municipalities and our community partners, to develop solutions that fit New Brunswick’s unique needs,” he said.

François Boutot, CEO of the New Brunswick Housing Corporation, reinforced this commitment, stating, “Improving housing options for all New Brunswickers remains our corporation’s focus. We are committed to helping provide New Brunswickers with safe, affordable, sustainable housing options, and I want to thank everyone involved for making this possible.”

Looking Ahead

The New Brunswick government’s proactive steps, including the HST rebate and the expansion of public housing, demonstrate a strong commitment to tackling the housing crisis. As these initiatives roll out, more residents will have access to stable and affordable housing, helping to strengthen communities across the province. With ongoing collaboration between government agencies, developers, and community organizations, New Brunswick is positioning itself to effectively meet the housing needs of its growing population.
